Raising Granddaughters 101: A Guide to Buiilding Confidence Through the Kinship Girls Club
By alesiac April 2, 2026
At Women United , we see you. We see the way you move through your home, the way you stir the pot of Sunday dinner while simultaneously helping with a math assignment, and the way you offer a steady hand to a grandchild who needs a little extra love. In our community, especially among our BIPOC caregivers , grandmothers are the backbone. You are the keepers of stories, the healers of hurts, and the pillars of tangible hope . But we also know that carrying the weight of the world, or even just the weight of a busy household, can lead to a heavy heart and a tired spirit. This is what we call burnout. It’s that feeling when your "well" has run dry, yet you’re still trying to pour into everyone else’s cup. Kinship care is a beautiful journey of connection and belonging, but it requires us to be mindful of our own wellness so we can continue nurturing the next generation with joy. We believe that taking care of yourself isn't a luxury; it’s an act of dignity and respect for the life you are building. Let’s walk through five practical, loving steps to help you beat burnout and reclaim your peace. 1. Reclaiming Your Time: The Power of a Routine One of the biggest contributors to burnout is the feeling of being "on call" 24/7. When we step into kinship care, the lines between "Grandma" and "Primary Caregiver" can get blurred. To protect your energy, it is essential to establish a scheduled babysitting routine . Think of this as setting a rhythm for your home. Work with the parents or other family members to create a predictable schedule. Decide which days are your "on" days and which hours are strictly for your own rest. When we have a plan, we reduce the stress of the unknown. It allows us to say, "I love you, and I will see you on Tuesday," instead of feeling guilty for needing a break. Pro-tip: Ensure that there is a backup plan. Whether it’s another family member or a trusted neighbor, having a "Plan B" means you aren't the only one holding the safety net. 🧑

There is something truly magical about the way the smell of fried fish and fresh bread can bring a neighborhood together. It’s more than just a meal, it’s a memory, a tradition, and a powerful way to show up for one another. At Women United , we believe that when we eat together, we grow together. That is why we are so thrilled to invite you to our upcoming Fish Fry & Po Boy Dinner Fundraiser ! Mark your calendars, Seattle! On Friday, April 17, 2026 , we are transforming the Angel of Hope Engagement Center into a hub of flavor, friendship, and community support. This isn't just about delicious food (though the food is going to be incredible!); it’s about fueling a movement of love that supports our kinship caregivers and the incredible grandmothers who are raising the next generation right here in our city. Every bite tells a story. Every plate powers a future. The Heart of Kinship Care in Seattle You might be wondering, what exactly is kinship care? In our community, many children are being raised by grandparents, aunts, uncles, or other family members because their biological parents are unable to do so. This is kinship care seattle , and it is the backbone of our community’s resilience. These caregivers, often grandmothers who thought they were heading into a quiet retirement, have stepped up to provide stability, love, and a safe home for their grandchildren. They are the unsung heroes of our neighborhoods. But stepping back into the role of a primary parent comes with immense challenges: financial strain, emotional exhaustion, and the need for a brand-new support system. That’s where we come in. At Women United, we walk side by side with these families. Through our Kinship Club , we provide the resources, the listening ear, and the community connection these caregivers need to thrive. When you support our Fish Fry, you are directly funding programs that offer everything from art therapy to basic necessities. A Menu Made with Love ✨ Let’s talk about the stars of the show! We’ve curated a menu that is designed to warm your soul and satisfy your cravings. For just $21 , you get a full, hearty meal prepared with care. Here’s what’s on the menu: · πŸ‘‰ Your Choice of Main: A crispy, golden Catfish Dinner, a tender Cod Dinner, or a seasoned Shrimp Po Boy. · πŸ‘‰ The Sides: Every order comes with savory Green Beans and your choice of creamy Potato Salad or crunchy Chips. · πŸ‘‰ The Sweet Treat: A slice of our signature, buttery Pound Cake. · πŸ‘‰ To Stay Hydrated: A chilled Bottled Water. Imagine biting into a perfectly toasted roll, filled with fresh, seasoned seafood, and knowing that your lunch or dinner is helping a local grandmother afford school supplies or a healing therapy session for her grandchild. That’s what we call a win-win! Why Your Support Matters: The Power of $21 In the grand scheme of things, $21 might seem like the cost of a standard takeout meal. But at Women United, that $21 is transformed into a movement of love . We are a nonprofit dedicated to community support , and every dollar raised from this fundraiser stays right here in Seattle to empower our kinship families. When you purchase a ticket, you are helping us maintain programs like Grandma's Hands Art Therapy . These classes aren't just about painting or crafting; they are about healing family trauma and giving grandmothers a space to process their journey through creativity. You are also supporting Hope’s Community Closet , which provides high-quality clothing and essentials to families in need with the dignity they deserve. We don't just give away clothes, we nurture spirits. Come for the experience, stay for the mission. Event Details at a Glance πŸ“ We want to make sure you don't miss a single moment of the fun! From our Backyard Socials to our Threads of Change initiative, everything we do is rooted in the belief that every child matters . We know that parenting the second time around is a journey that shouldn't be walked alone. The grandmothers in our Kinship Club often share stories of the "collective joy" they find when they realize they aren't the only ones navigating these waters. This fundraiser is an extension of that joy, an invitation for the wider Seattle community to step into our circle and say, "We see you, we value you, and we are here for you." Can't Make It? Visit our Shop: Support us by checking out our online shop for unique items that give back. A Message of Gratitude We want to take a moment to thank our incredible partners and volunteers who make events like this possible. It takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to support the ones doing the raising. To our supporters in Skyway and throughout greater Seattle, thank you . Your belief in our mission is what keeps us moving forward. We’ve seen so much growth over the past year, as reflected in our 2025 Reflection on Community Care . Each event, each fundraiser, and each shared meal is a brick in the foundation of a more equitable and supportive city. See You There! 🐟 The oil will be hot, the fish will be crispy, and the atmosphere will be full of love. We can't wait to see your smiling faces at the Angel of Hope Engagement Center on April 17th. Let's make this Fish Fry the most successful one yet! Remember, when we invest in our grandmothers and kinship caregivers, we are investing in the very heart of Seattle. We are ensuring that every child has a stable, loving home and a community that cheers them on. Love is an action. Let’s take that action together: one Po Boy at a time! Community support can take many forms, but sometimes it begins with something simple — making sure every family has access to basic necessities like clothing. Women United’s Hope’s Community Closet is a powerful example of what happens when compassion and community action come together. The program provides free new and gently used clothing for individuals and families , including everyday essentials, coats, shoes, and other seasonal items. Held every fourth Saturday of the month , Hope’s Community Closet serves families across Skyway, West Hill, Renton, and surrounding areas, offering a welcoming space where people can access what they need without barriers or judgment. Beyond clothing, the program represents something deeper — dignity, compassion, and community care. Volunteers and community partners come together to ensure that no one feels alone when facing difficult times. The photo above captures a moment of community participation and support for this meaningful project. Contributions like these help keep the closet stocked and ready to serve families who rely on it. ο»Ώ Programs like Hope’s Community Closet remind us that when communities work together, hope becomes something tangible — something we can wear, share, and pass forward.

Community is about connection — and Women United Seattle is living proof of what happens when caring hearts and community action come together to lift one another up. Located in Skyway and West Hill, Women United provides critical support for kinship families , especially Black, African American, and BIPOC caregivers who are 55 years and older . Kinship caregivers often step into parenting roles unexpectedly, taking on the responsibility of raising grandchildren and other young relatives with little notice or support. Women United meets them where they are — with connection, resources, and a sense of belonging. Founded and led by Alesia Cannady, who started the organization in honor of her granddaughter — whom she is raising — Women United has been making a difference in Skyway since 2015 . Ms. Alesia brings her lived experience and deep community roots to programs that nurture families socially, emotionally, and practically. What Women United Offers: ✨ Kinship Support Groups — spaces where caregivers can share, learn, and grow together. ✨ Grandma’s Hands Art Therapy — creative healing for caregivers and kids. ✨ Love Train Block Party — a beloved annual community celebration. ✨ Hope’s Community Closet — a monthly event offering free clothing and household essentials. And Women United’s impact doesn’t stop there — Alesia also serves on the Skyway Community Advisory Committee , helping shape the future Skyway Community Center so it meets the needs of seniors and families alike. πŸ‘‰ Everyone is invited to the next Hope’s Community Closet event on February 28, 12:30–5 p.m. at King County Fire District 20. Free clothing, shoes, household goods, and community support await! Read the full story here - https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/WAKING/bulletins/407f253

2025 was a year filled with purpose, connection, and the unshakable spirit of unity. At Women United, our mission to lift families and children continues to be lived out through impactful, joy-filled events that remind us what community truly means. πŸš‚ Love Train Community Block Party In September, we welcomed hundreds to our vibrant Love Train Back to School Block Party. With families lining the streets, the sound of laughter echoed alongside the rhythm of community drumbeats. Kids danced beside the life-sized cardboard train, while parents browsed Hope’s Community Closet for free clothing, shoes, and school essentials. Local vendors and volunteers brought games, food, and endless joy, making this event not just a celebration—but a declaration that every child matters . πŸ‘• Hope’s Community Closet Hope’s Closet traveled with us throughout the year, meeting families where they were—on porches, parking lots, and church grounds. Volunteers lovingly sorted racks of clothing, coats, shoes, and accessories. Whether it was a teen needing new shoes or a grandmother finding a warm coat for her grandchild, the Closet offered more than material goods—it offered dignity, choice, and hope. 🧑 Kinship Carnival: Every Child Matters Our Kinship Carnival stood as a powerful tribute to families raising relatives and children outside the traditional family structure. Activities, raffles, and resources created a welcoming space where every child and caregiver felt seen, supported, and celebrated. 🎨 Grandma’s Hands Art Therapy We also witnessed healing and storytelling through art with Grandma’s Hands, a therapeutic workshop series inspired by the power of intergenerational wisdom. Participants shared laughs, tears, and strokes of color as they crafted art reflecting their identity and faith—like the woman who proudly displayed her towel reading: “She who kneels before God can stand before anyone.” πŸ¦ƒ Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway To end the year with warmth and gratitude, our Turkey Giveaway ensured hundreds of families had the means to enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving. Volunteers handed out meal boxes with smiles and open hearts, affirming once again— we lift each other up . πŸ’¬ Final Thought Each event this year was a movement of love and community. Together, we filled closets, stomachs, and hearts. As we look to the future, let’s continue this work—side by side, hand in hand, lifting one another.
